In 2020 as I started mocking up the new Brettro website design I decided to do it using Adobe XD. I’d used Sketch on a project before, but as a hard core Adobe Creative Cloud user I thought I’d see what XD was all about.
XD
I used XD to create several interface designs, one for Brettro and one for another blog, and then used it to start the Brettro Design System. Then in June 2023 Adobe stopped development on XD. I was bummed, but I had not focused much on the work I’d done in XD, so I didn’t think much about it.
Figma
Late in 2023 when Adobe abandoned its acquisition of Figma I started paying closer attention to that product. I heard great things, started seeing more design kits and thought, “you should take a closer look at Figma.”
About a month ago I started doing just that. I started transferring my Brettro Design System work from XD to Figma and find it very intuitive and easy to use. So far I’ve only recreated the color palette and typography sections of my design system but am continuing to use it for the rest.
I also plan to transfer my interface design for Brettro to it from XD.
Sketch to XD to Figma
While I have only used Figma for a few months, it functions similarly to both Sketch and XD, so I feel very comfortable in the app and using its basic and mid-level functions. And I’m definitely eager to dive into the app’s variable functionality. I’m excited to continue learning and to become a power user of the app as I continue to transfer my work from XD to Figma. I am sure I’ll document the things I learn here.
